TIPPER TIME: On her way to speak...

TIPPER TIME: On her way to speak to the American Psychological Assn. in Los Angeles, “Second Lady” Tipper Gore will stop in Anaheim Hills tonight to boost the campaign of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kathleen Brown. . . . At $500 each, about 150 guests are expected poolside at the Peralta Hills home of Democratic fund-raiser and attorney Wylie Aitken. “We met with the Secret Service and they crawled all over our house,’ says Aitken. “They probably looked in my dirty closet.”

SEN. INTEGRITY?: Capping a 16-year career in the Legislature, state Sen. Marian Bergeson was named Wednesday to receive California Common Cause’s 1994 “Integrity Award,” along with Democratic Sen. Gary Hart of Santa Barbara. . . . The watchdog group says the award goes to “individuals whose public service is distinguished by integrity and adherence to ethical principles.” The Newport Beach Republican is running unopposed for county supervisor.

STAYING POWER: Sure enough, many Americans are often looking for quick study when it comes to martial arts. (OC Live) Steve Spry Karate Institute in Stanton, for instance, has a short course for those who want to learn a few street-smart self-defense basics; others even offer a onetime 90-minute session. . . . But Spry is no fan of what he calls the “drive-through” approach to things these days. “That’s American. If we could speed up the birth process, we would have done that a long time ago.”

POSTER CARD: That’s not Carmelo Manto’s new menu propped up next to Pacific Coast Highway outside his Corona del Mar restaurant. It’s a sandwich-board-sized get-well card for Manto, 63, hospitalized suddenly with a brain aneurysm. . . . Manto, who has operated Carmelo’s Ristorante with wife Judie for 10 years, is in good condition at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. “We’ve been besieged with calls,” says Judie Manto. “This will mean a great deal to him.”
