The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame will...

The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame will gain seven new inductees today, including former USC quarterback Jim Hardy and ex-Washington Coach Don James, in the sixth annual ceremonies beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Court of Champions Plaza at the stadium.

Other inductees are former Cal halfback Vic Bottari, former Iowa halfback Bob Jeter, longtime Tournament of Roses member Lay Leishman, former Wisconsin wide receiver Pat Richter and Russell Saunders, a USC quarterback who will be honored posthumously.

Cotton Bowl officials are seeking a link with the Big 12 Conference as a replacement for the Jan. 1 matchup of the Southwest Conference champion and an invited guest.

Disgraced Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona, 33, was indicted in Buenos Aires for firing an air rifle at journalists besieging his home last February.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of two years in prison. No trial date was set.

Maradona was banished from the 1994 World Cup after testing positive for drugs.

The United States defeated South Korea, 7-5, moving into a quarterfinal matchup today in the World Amateur Baseball Championship at Managua, Nicaragua.

Defending champion Jill McGill posted a pair of 3-and-2 victories to advance to today’s round of 16 in the 94th U.S. Women’s Amateur at Hot Springs, Va., as all three qualifying medalists were eliminated along with seven of the eight members of the British Curtis Cup team.

Ireland’s Sonia O’Sullivan, a former Villanova runner, won the women’s 3,000 meters in 8 minutes 31.84 seconds in the European Championships at Helsinki.

The Dallas Stars of the NHL have received center Peter Zezel and right wing Grant Marshall from the Toronto Maple Leafs as compensation for the Leafs’ signing of free-agent right wing Mike Craig.

The sixth annual California State Games, a statewide amateur sports festival modeled on Olympic tradition, begins today and continues through Sunday in Ontario. An estimated 4,500 athletes between 6 and 18 will compete in 17 sports.
