LET’S BE FRIENDS: In past years, the bordering cities of Orange and Villa Park have occasionally had jurisdictional disputes. Some longtime Villa Park residents won’t have anything to do with the big city adjoining them. But now Villa Park is considering a contract with the Orange Fire Department for its fire protection (B2). . . . Says Villa Park Councilman Joseph S. Barsa, urging that old enmities be forgotten: “Even the two worst enemies, the Arabs and Israelis, are now making peace.”

ALL ABOARD: Don’t tell Josh Spencer of San Clemente that his skateboarding won’t get him anywhere. Spencer, a 16-year-old junior at San Clemente High, recently skated in Russia for the California Amateur Skateboard League team, in events connected to the Goodwill Games there (E1). . . . Spencer loved the freedom of skating in St. Petersburg’s famed Hermitage Square. He wrote home: “Skating is great here and the cops don’t hassle you for doing it.”

MINOR HAPPINESS: An intense baseball fan, Barbara Jean Durell of Anaheim is sorry to see the major leagues on strike. But as a businesswoman, hey, maybe it won’t be so bad. Durell owns Minor Leagues, Major Dreams, an Anaheim company that sells minor league baseball items, mainly caps. . . . If you want a cap for the Fort Wayne Wizards, for example, or the Capital City Bombers, she’s got them. Regarding the strike, says Durell: “There’s no doubt a strike will increase interest in minor league ball. It will be the only game in town.”

DOWNHILL RACERS? Today’s baseball strike may seem a relief to some disappointed California Angels fans. The team is 21 games under .500 baseball (47-68) and in last place in the American League West division. . . . How was the team doing when Buck Rodgers was fired as Angels manager on May 17? It was seven games below .500 then, and in second place, two games behind division leader Texas.
