‘Aladdin’ Added: Disneyland has updated one of its oldest--and most simplistic--rides.

“The Storybook Land Canal Boats,” which small children will instantly recognize as the ride in which slow-moving boats are swallowed by Monstro the whale, has added scenes from the animated movies “Aladdin” and “The Little Mermaid.”

On the ride, which debuted with the opening of the park in 1955, women dressed as girls in white knee socks give a guided tour past miniature villages. The villages depict scenes from such classic stories as “Cinderella,” “The Three Little Pigs” and others.

Now, added to the list are the gold-leafed, onion-shaped domes of the Sultan’s royal palace from “Aladdin.” There is also the marketplace where Aladdin dodged the Sultan’s guards and met the princess. The lamp? It’s in the “Cave of Wonders,” surrounded by the usual gold booty.

Also added were Prince Eric’s castle from “The Little Mermaid” and the willow tree where Ursula the Sea Witch hangs out.
