CU’S JD? Three years ago, officials of Chapman College decided its growth merited it becoming a university. So what’s next for Chapman U.? It’s considering opening a law school. . . . A university committee, including local lawyers and judges, has discussed it for almost a year and a decision could come within 30 days. Says local Bar Assn. President Steve McCracken: “Orange County is big enough and growing fast enough that it could easily use another law school; perhaps more than one.”

POLITICAL RACE? South County Democrats know their candidate in the 73rd Assembly race, Lee Walker, is a long shot to unseat incumbent Republican Bill Morrow. Walker’s backers could be betting on other long shots--with an Aug. 25 fund-raiser at the Del Mar Race Track. . . . “We’ll share racing tips and talk politics,” says organizer Kathleen Calzada. And maybe study the odds: Morrow trounced Walker with ease two years ago.

REAL DREAMS: The colorful, cigar-smoking former general manager of the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Dana Point, Henry Schielein, is back--he’s the new chief executive of the exclusive Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach. Schielein, credited with bringing top hotel awards to the Ritz, left last year to run the giant Grand Wailea Resort in Hawaii. . . . “It got a bit too dreamy,” he says. “You can only watch the sun set so many times.” Now he is charged with transforming the members-only club into a posh resort (B1).

REVIVAL TIME: With Woodstock ’94 over, you want to see a tape of the 1969 original? You might have to wait in line. Most local video stores report that the two tapes of the 1969 Woodstock--the original tape and new version, called the director’s cut--are getting checked out as fast as they’re returned. . . . Jim Satler, who works at Blockbuster Video in Westminster, has a special interest in it: “My mom (Linda) was a hippie. She took me to see the Woodstock movie when I was just 2; it’s just about my earliest memory.”
