Alaska’s Gov. Hickel Won’t Seek a 3rd Term

JUNEAU, Alaska —
Gov. Walter J. Hickel, a political maverick who pressed for aggressive development of Alaska’s wilderness, announced Tuesday he will not seek reelection.
“It was a tough decision,” the 74-year-old Republican said. He said he was confident he could have won again but would not elaborate on his reasons for not seeking a third term.
