THE DEUCE, YOU SAY! The local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is awarding a new honor, called the Deuce Award. A plaque goes to any police officer who makes at least 25 drunk-driving arrests in a year’s time. . . . La Palma Police Officer Jim Engen, who got a Deuce Award this week, explained its name to his City Council: When police stop a suspect and ask how much he or she had to drink, the usual response is, “Just two beers!”

FOUR-BIT PROMO: Those selling lots at Coto de Caza want you to feel like it’s far removed from the urban sprawl of the rest of Orange County--but not too far removed. Their latest promotion: “Fifty Cents from the Rest of the World.” Stop in the visitors information center and they’ll give you two shiny quarters to pay the toll on the new Foothill tollway. . . . Says marketing spokesman Tom Martin: “The toll road has cut more than 10 minutes off the route from Coto, which means residents can make the drive to John Wayne Airport in 20 minutes.”

STAY TUNED: What do you do for your 20th-anniversary encore after you’ve had Atty. Gen. Janet Reno as your 1993 speaker? How about a U.S. Supreme Court justice? California Women Lawyers’ speaker at the group’s annual state dinner at the Anaheim Hilton & Towers on Sept. 22 will be Ruth Bader Ginsburg. . . . “We started this group with the idea of getting more women lawyers on the bench,” says its director, Anita M. Miller. “If we’re going to keep up this list of hits, we’re going to have to get even more women on the bench.”

CRUISIN’ CUBS: What kind of car is this--one drives and three people push? It’s the first annual Cub Scout Pushcart Derby Race on Saturday morning at Fullerton College. . . . Some 300 youngsters will compete in their own vehicles. . . . “We are trying to give it that atmosphere of NASCAR,” says David Hall, one of the cub masters organizing it. “It’s just going to be a good wholesome event for the kids.”
