El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana will play host to a qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur championship today beginning at 7 a.m.

The field of 54 includes Jody Duclos of Moorpark and Linda Chen Olsen of Granada Hills, each of whom played in the U.S. Women’s Amateur last week in Virginia.

Players are vying for 18 available berths over 18 holes of stroke play. The Mid-Amateur is Sept. 10-15 at Tacoma Golf and Country Club in Tacoma, Wash.

Other area entrants include Reiko Watanabe, Desiree Dontas and Sylvia Kim of Wood Ranch Country Club; Rosanne Minasian, Yumi Saito and Katherine Sullivan of the Sepulveda Women’s Club; Sandra Silverstone of Braemar; Catherine Swanson of Olivas Park and Betty Pfahler of Crystalaire.

The Mid-Amateur, gaining in popularity because college-age players are excluded, is open to players 25 and older with an index of 9.4 or less.

El Caballero, one of the most difficult courses in the region, has a par of 72.

Chatsworth’s Andrea Gaston, one of the region’s top amateurs, already has qualified. She earned an exemption by advancing to the match-play semifinal round of the Mid-Amateur last year.
