COMMERCE : Home Depot Store to Provide 200 Jobs

Share

About 200 new jobs will be available upon completion of a 105,000-square-foot Home Depot store being built at Telegraph Road and Garfield Avenue. Construction of the household goods and building supply store is expected to be completed by October.

Home Depot spokeswoman Nell Parker said the store will begin hiring two months before opening. Parker said the store has a policy of hiring its employees from the surrounding community.

Justin McCarthy, regional director for the city’s redevelopment commission, said Home Depot officials chose the location because of its high visibility next to the Santa Ana Freeway and the city’s utility and gross-receipts taxes.

“This was a perfect fit,” McCarthy said.

Of the $2 million in annual sales tax revenue estimated by Home Depot officials, $300,000 will go to the city, McCarthy said.

Home Depot, based in Atlanta, is leasing the 8.7-acre location from the Sbicca family, which operated American Foundry at the site. Founded in 1920 by Dominic Sbicca, the foundry melted down old engines and produced cast-iron fittings until it closed in 1988.

Manufacturing accounts for 24% of the 1,800 businesses based in Commerce, down from 45% 10 years ago.
