Tool’s High Price

Share

* Your article, ‘Political Races May Be Lost in the Translation,’ (July 30) revealed what very few voters seem to know: that candidates’ ballot statements are not only not free but very expensive to the candidates or their supporters.

Another little-known fact is that ballot statements may be wholly fictional. No one reviews the statements for accuracy.

The candidate’s statement is a powerful tool. It is the only piece of election material that goes to every voter. It used to be an affordable way for grass-roots citizens to reach voters, but now it’s too costly for most public-spirited citizens.

I hope The Times will become the voice for all local candidates and a watchdog for voters by giving adequate, accurate coverage to school and community college board candidates. Citizens rely on the press to check statements for truthfulness.
