HOT CALLS: Don’t tell Kathy Kifaya it’s been hot. She knows it from all the people crowding her office. Kifaya runs the county’s energy crisis intervention program, which helps about 3,500 people each year who can’t pay their utility bills. This month, more than double the usual number are keeping their appointments to seek help. . . . Says Kifaya: “It’s a burden for families on a small income. They need air conditioning for their babies or for the elderly.”

FUN TOMORROWS: Suzanne Seibold didn’t sleep at all Sunday night. “It’s hard to sleep when you have to get up at 3 a.m. to appear on national television,” she says. Seibold and three of her co-workers from Fidelity National Title Co. in Irvine appeared on NBC’s “Today” on Monday to talk about their recent good fortune--each will get more than $85,000 the next 20 years for hitting the California lottery on a shared ticket. Right after that it was the “Mark and Brian” show on KLOS-FM radio. . . . What’s next? “We’re hoping for Oprah Winfrey,” she says smiling. “This has really been a lot of fun.”

THEY’RE HERE! “Holy Traders,” picture cards of Catholic figures, are hot off the press and available through Catholic publications. The set of 40 trading cards includes Americans like Mother Cabrini. . . . The best known? Father Junipero Serra, “Apostle of California” and founder of Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776. Among Serra’s accomplishments listed on the card: “Introduced cattle, sheep, grains and fruit to California from Mexico.”

PUTTING ON THE POUNDS: If you put any cans in those food bins at your office, you should be pleased to hear the totals: The county’s Food Distribution Center says the recent food drive among 50 local companies brought in 70,000 pounds of food. Cindy Cross of the center says that’s enough to feed 150,000 meals to needy people in Orange County. . . . Biggest contributor based on pounds per employee: Aerochem Inc. of Orange--21 pounds per worker.
