Hank Kim matched the U.S. Amateur record with an 8-under-par 64 Monday in the suspended first round of medal play.

“I didn’t miss one shot,” said the North Carolina State senior, who matched the mark set by Phil Mickelson in 1990.

Kim, 22, of Jonesboro, Ga., had eight birdies in a bogey-free round on the Valley Course to take a one-stroke lead over three-time U.S. junior champion Tiger Woods, who also played on the Valley Course. Woods, 18, of Cypress, will begin his college career at Stanford this fall.

Almost half of the 312 players in the tournament’s 94th edition were unable to complete their rounds on the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass’ Stadium and Valley courses after rain delayed play for more than three hours.

Other Orange County players who completed their first round: Brea’s Kevin Claborn shot 76; Kevin Lea of Tustin and Scott Gibson of Huntington Beach had 77s, and Terry Noe of Fullerton shot 80.

The low 64 after today’s second round advance to match play.
