A Moorpark supermarket supervisor was held at gunpoint in his office and robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash by a thief who fled on foot, sheriff’s deputies said Thursday.

Service manager James Jolicoeur, 25, who had been on temporary assignment at the Moorpark store for less than a week, was robbed about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday by a man who followed him to his office, authorities said.

According to accounts given to deputies, the suspect had purchased groceries at the store at 101 W. Los Angeles Ave. and then inquired about a returned check belonging to his girlfriend.

When Jolicoeur went to his office to investigate the check, he was followed by the suspect, who brandished an automatic handgun when the door was opened, Deputy Jerardo Gomez said. At the gunman’s orders, Jolicoeur filled the thief’s paper bag with money and then got under a desk while the suspect continued rifling the office, Gomez said.

After leaving the store, the gunman was briefly but unsuccessfully pursued by store employees.
