“Where L.A.’s Top Designers Shop” headlines one of the print ads for De signers Furniture Mart. I didn’t run into any of Los Angeles’ top designers while researching this store, but after checking out the inventory, I would say it’s entirely possible that you might.

This is a family business, and owner John Green handpicks the styles.

The quality of the wood pieces, as well as the upholstered pieces, is quite good, considering that the prices are so reasonable.

The armoires are particularly well-priced: a pie/jelly cabinet--excellent for storage or display--in natural or waxed pine is only $247. Usually these run around $350.

An entertainment/storage center that is slightly bigger, in solid pine and with one adjustable shelf, is $295. As is the case with all of the wood pieces here, custom finishes are available.

A country bonnet-top armoire, with two adjustable shelves and a clothes rod, measures 78 inches high by 40 inches wide and is a reasonable $495--about $300 less than at many sources. Most wood pieces come from local manufacturers, and while we’re not talking Century quality, they are made very well.

We reported recently on some slipcovered sofas at Mark Friedman’s in Santa Monica, and here’s another selection at a good price.

A 92-inch upholstered sofa--and there’s a wide range of fabrics to select from--plus the slipcover of your choosing is $795.

All the sofas are kiln-dried elder wood, and the styles are transitional. The sofa-and-chair combo for $995 is a particularly good buy.

Several factors enhance the bargains on these sofa/slipcover combinations.

There is a lifetime warranty on the frames; a fabric protection treatment is offered at no cost; and you can trade in the slipcover at any time and receive a 50% credit applied to a new one.

Good-quality futons start at $167; check out the “clam bed” at $199. Sofa beds start at $395.

A handsome, queen-sized canopy bed was $399, and I’ve seen similar designs elsewhere for as high as $1,200.

Most of the prices are 30% to 40% below retail, some even lower.

There’s a small “clearance” room upstairs that provides some super one-of-a-kind bargains. A four-drawer captain’s bed of solid pine was priced at $249.
