Army helicopters evacuated most of the residents of the village of Allakaket 180 miles northwest of Fairbanks after the Koyukuk River surged to its highest level in 40 years. Flood victims were taken to Ft. Wainwright near Fairbanks and given food and shelter. No injuries were reported. Up to three-quarters of the village’s 35 to 40 homes were flooded. Rivers in interior Alaska have been rising because of heavy rains.
