SAN PEDRO : Student Mural Dresses Up L.A. City Hall

No one can say the South Bay is not represented at Los Angeles City Hall.

On Tuesday, two South Bay elementary school students saw their paintings hung outside City Hall to help cover a large net used to catch debris that may fall because of earthquake damage.

The theme for the 14- by 48-foot vinyl murals was “My Wonderful Los Angeles.” Silvia Luna and Maria Ladezma drew a palm tree on an island surrounded by blue and a boat on the water in front of two mountains with the sun setting behind it.

They were among about 50 students in a summer school program at Crestwood Street Elementary School in San Pedro who were given the task of creating murals that represent the South Bay, a school official said.

Three other murals were done by students from Pacoima, East Los Angeles and Canoga Park.

The net near the top of the historic City Hall building has not received high marks for its beauty. In fact, some say it looks like a black armband on the building.

“People have commented, ‘Who died?’ ” said Noelia Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for Mayor Richard Riordan, who attended the City Hall ceremony Tuesday. The murals could cover the net for up to two years.
