Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Freeway Lanes to Reopen for Holiday Traffic

Share

Truck lanes along the Golden State Freeway near Santa Clarita will reopen today and Monday to ease Labor Day weekend traffic, state transportation officials announced Thursday.

The lanes will be open from 2 p.m. to midnight each day to all types of vehicles.

“That’s one of the key arteries in and out of town during the Labor Day weekend, and all the holiday three-day weekends,” said Russell Snyder, California Department of Transportation spokesman.

An average of 130,000 vehicles travel along the Golden State Freeway each day, according to Caltrans statistics. But the volume of traffic is much heavier on holiday weekends, Snyder said.

The truck lanes have been closed while repairs proceed on the interchange between the Golden State and Antelope Valley freeways, which was severely damaged during the Northridge earthquake.

“We have to give the contractor a lot of latitude,” Snyder said. “For moving equipment and material, they need to have a lot of access to the freeway.”

Reconstruction of the interchange is expected to be finished in November.
