COSTA MESA — Police investigating the deaths of an elderly couple found in their home said Friday that each appeared to have died from a single gunshot to the head.
Police and coroner investigators found a revolver in the bedroom with the victims Thursday evening after they entered the house in the 200 block of East Wilson Street, police said. There was no sign of forced entry, police said.
The man has been identified by police as James Arthur Mayhew, 79. Identification of the 64-year-old woman was being withheld Friday pending notification of her next of kin.
Neighbors have identified the residents as husband and wife who had lived in the neighborhood for 25 years.
The husband, they said, was a retired Marine Corps pilot, and the couple had met and married in Japan.
