INSIDE SANTA RITA: Prison Memoir of a War Protester by Joan Baez Sr. (John Daniel & Co.: $10.; 89 pp., paperback original). The mother of the folk singer became involved in her daughter’s anti-war activities in 1967, which lead to her incarceration in the Santa Rita Rehabilitation Center. Baez’s interactions with the regular inmates--women whose pasts involved drugs, poverty, violence and crime--strengthened her commitment to social activism. Her emphasis on political morality seems sadly dated in a time when political action has become synonymous with lobbying and influence peddling.
