Bees stung an 86-year-old man more than 1,000 times Saturday and attacked three other people after the man disturbed a 10-foot-tall hive as he mowed his lawn.

J. C. Johnson, his son, a police officer and an emergency worker were taken to the hospital. Police quarantined a 10-block area while beekeepers destroyed the hive.

The bees attacked Johnson and then stung his 59-year-old son about 500 times as he tried to help his father. Both were in stable condition Sunday at a hospital.

The officer and the emergency rescue worker were treated at the hospital and released, officials said.

Johnson disturbed the bees when he bumped the wall of a building next door. The hive was between the frame and paneling.

Beekeepers estimated that 75,000 bees were in the hive.
