COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Stokes Says He’ll Be Ready

Wide receiver J.J. Stokes, who did not play after the first series of the second half in UCLA’s season-opening 25-23 victory over Tennessee, said he will be ready to play Saturday against Southern Methodist.

“No question,” he said.

Stokes, who suffered a thigh bruise as he caught a pass on the game’s second play Saturday, said it tightened on him. He still caught six passes for 84 yards as UCLA won its first game in which he did not score since it beat Oregon State in 1992.

Stokes’ return is bad news for SMU Coach Tom Rossley.

“We had trouble with J.J. Meadors on Saturday,” Rossley said. “Tell me J.J. Stokes isn’t playing.”

Meadors, of Arkansas, caught five passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-14 victory over the Mustangs.
