A woman was seriously injured Tuesday when a car driven by her daughter spun out of control and flipped over on the Ventura Freeway in Camarillo, officials said.

Dozens of midafternoon motorists pulled off the freeway immediately after the women’s car came to a rest upside down in the median.

Some tried to pry open the car door with a crow bar, while a registered nurse who was passing by began treating 66-year-old Insoon Hwang, witnesses said.

“She had stopped breathing, so while they tried to get the door open, I tried to revive her,” said Brian Sherman, a 37-year-old Ventura nurse. “By the time the Fire Department showed up, we had gotten a light pulse.”

Fire officials said Sherman, who supplied Hwang with fluids through an intravenous tube, helped save the woman’s life.

“I’m an (intravenous) specialist,” Sherman said. “I knew that she was in shock and getting fluids was important to keep blood flowing to her head and vital organs.”

After eight hours of surgery, Hwang, was in serious condition at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, officials said. Her daughter, 41-year-old Im Sung Chong, was released from St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital in Camarillo with cuts and bruises, officials said. Both women were wearing seat belts.
