GLENDALE : Group Plans Its 2nd Quake Safety Fair

A south Glendale homeowners group that has already made efforts to teach its members about earthquake safety is sharing its knowledge with residents from all of Glendale.

About 200 people attended the Adams Hill Homeowners Assn.’s first earthquake preparedness day last year. The event was mostly a neighborhood affair, but in light of the disastrous Northridge earthquake, the group expects heightened interest when the event is repeated next week.

“Last year, I think most people stopped by because they were interested in the hook-and-ladder firetruck parked outside,” said Garry Ackerman, president of the homeowner group, who hosted the quake fair at his home last year.

The fair, scheduled 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 17, has been moved to Chevy Chase Baptist Church, 1209 E. Garfield Ave., to accommodate a bigger turnout, Ackerman said.

Instead of one firetruck, there will be four, and agencies ranging from the local fire and police departments to the American Red Cross will participate.

“The emphasis will be on being better prepared should we have another major earthquake as we had in January, or one of a greater magnitude,” he said.

Organizers said the free fair will include displays on how to secure house foundations and water heaters, ham radio communications, survival and tenting equipment, and videos of past earthquakes.
