It’s Up to Cities to Help Libraries

Share

* We have now experienced many months of curtailed service in our county branch libraries--fewer days, shortened hours, and reduced book and periodical funds. Last year there was a 35% cut in state funding.

Last July, I wrote suggesting that local support be considered to supplement county funding. Communities in Southern California (Pasadena,, South Pasadena, Altadena) have passed measures by large margins. Here in Orange County, Newport Beach and Mission Viejo have acted and now Tustin’s City Council is considering a program to spend $50,000 a year for added services.

It does not seem prudent to have cities remove themselves from the Orange County public library system; some have discussed it. Since libraries are needed by everyone in every community, it seems some action should be taken to maintain and develop these priceless resources.
