Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden figured the game wouldn’t be pretty. He was right--sort of.

Danny Kanell had another sensational performance against Maryland and the fourth-ranked Seminoles rebounded from a stunning halftime deficit with 35 consecutive points in a 52-20 Atlantic Coast Conference victory Saturday.

Maryland was coming off a 33-point loss to Duke but led the Seminoles early in the second quarter, 13-3, and at halftime, 20-17.

“When I saw the Duke game, I thought this game might get ugly,” Bowden said. “The only ugly thing was us.”

Said Kanell: “We came in here hoping for a shutout and hoping to score 60 points. Maybe we overlooked them a little bit.”

Kanell, in a performance reminiscent of his effort against Maryland last season, directed the Seminoles on two third-quarter scoring drives that put the defending national champions in command.

Kanell completed 28 of 44 passes for 417 yards and a touchdown. A year ago, he started against Maryland for injured Charlie Ward and completed 28 passes for 341 yards as Florida State pulled away in the second half.

In Saturday’s game, Zack Crockett and Rock Preston each scored twice and the Seminoles, 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, amassed 731 yards.

Bowden attributed the second-half blitz to superior depth.

“Maryland just gave it everything they had but they ran out of gas,” he said. “It was a hot day and we played twice as many players as they did. I thought it had an effect.”

Maryland’s Scott Milanovich completed 17 of 34 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

“I think we gained a lot of confidence today,” Maryland Coach Mark Duffner said. “Now we need what they have: depth.”

After generating 185 yards of offense in the first half, Maryland (0-2, 0-2) fizzled in the second.
