NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Slerp Goes East, Wins the Equipoise

Southland-based Slerp beat Seattle Morn by two lengths to win the $100,000 Equipoise Mile at Arlington International Racecourse on Sunday.

Slerp, ridden by Earlie Fires, finished in 1:35 2/5 and paid $5.40, $2.40 and $2.20. Seattle Morn returned $2.40 and $2.10 and Dancing Jon, another four lengths back, returned $2.10.

Sunny Shamrock won the $50,000-added Joseph A. Gimma Stakes for New York-bred 2-year-old fillies by a head at Belmont Park.

Ridden by Mike Luzzi and carrying 114 pounds, Sunny Shamrock covered six furlongs in 1:10 2/5 and paid $9.00, $3.40 and $3.00. Blum Beauty paid $2.60 and $2.40 and Talcountess returned $4.20.

Trained by Lisa Lewis, Sunny Shamrock scored her first stakes victory and has won two of her three starts. She earned $33,240 for owner Einar P. Robsham.

In the New York-bred 2-year-old colt division, heavily favored Cyrano scored a 6 1/2-length victory. The Seattle Slew colt won in 1:10 3/5 and paid $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10. Northern Centaur paid $3.60 and $2.60 and Billy The Bid returned $3.20.

Goldminer’s Dream won the inaugural $75,000 Ben Cohen Stakes at Pimlico Race Course by 5 1/2 lengths.

Goldminer’s Dream, ridden by Jeff Carle, covered six furlongs in 1:10 1/5 and paid $21.60, $8.40 and $5.60.
