Where does the money go?

Some may question how finances can be considered “tight” in a school district spending nearly $100 million this school year.

In the 21,500-student Irvine Unified School District, most of the $98.7-million budget is spent on employee salaries and benefits, similar to public school districts throughout the state.

In Irvine, 80% of the budget, or $79 million, will go to district teachers and classified employees. About $2.9 million--or 3% of the budget--will be spent on supplies for the district’s 31 schools.

The nine-member group was created by the City Council to study designs for businesses and come up with recommendations to improve the downtown economic environment, city officials said.

Some of the guidelines committee members will discuss at today’s meeting include signs, architecture, landscaping and trees. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting, which will be at Rutabegorz Restaurant, 211 Pomona Ave., at 7 p.m.
