The school board has ousted board member Lynn Dymally, who has not attended a board meeting in a year.

The board declared Dymally’s seat vacant Tuesday night. “The seat needs to be filled by someone who is going to be here and participate,” said board President Michael Hopwood. “Our goal is to have the board at full strength.”

The district can appoint a successor or schedule a special election to fill the seat, county education officials said. Supt. Harold L. Cebrun said officials have not decided which option to take.

Dymally, 36, was elected to the seven-member board in 1991. Her term would have expired in November, 1995. She was unavailable for comment.

School officials have given varying reasons for her absences. Cebrun said that until early this year she had periodically called and said she was sick. Others say she has boycotted meetings to protest the state takeover of the Compton Unified School District, which has reduced the board to an advisory body under state administrator Jerome Harris.
