Anaheim’s Robert Droughns returned the opening kickoff 87 yards and the Colonists went on to a 20-0 nonleague victory against Loara Thursday night at Glover Stadium.

Droughns fielded the kickoff at the 13, cut up the middle and got two blocks near midfield from his brother, Reuben. He outran two Loara defenders to the end zone.

The rest of the game was dominated by Reuben Droughns and the Anaheim defensive unit. Reuben gained 102 yards in 20 carries and scored on an 11-yard run in the second quarter.

He left the game midway through the fourth quarter after suffering a minor knee bruise while making a tackle.

Anaheim’s defense, meanwhile, held Loara to 47 yards rushing, and 131 yards overall. The Colonists’ defense has given up 14 points in two games.

“(The defense) did a good job for us,” Anaheim Coach Allen Carter. “We still have a lot of work to do, but I believe we are getting better. Irvine (next week’s opponent) is tough. I don’t know how we’re going to survive that game.”

Anaheim (2-0) capped the scoring in the third quarter on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Rudy Herrera to Travis Pena. Herrera completed five of nine passes for 59 yards. Pena caught four passes for 49 yards.

Jim Kirkland completed eight of 23 passes for 84 yards and one interception for Loara (0-2).
