SANTA ANA : Rancho Santiago College Budget OKd

The governing board of the Rancho Santiago College District has approved a 1994-95 budget.

The Board of Trustees this week approved the plan on a 5-2 vote, with Trustees Charles W. (Pete) Maddox, Brian Conley, Lawrence Labrado, Enriqueta Ramos and Michael Ortell supporting it and Trustees Shirley Ralston and Tom Saenz opposed.

Ralston and Saenz said the board had not sufficiently discussed several new expenditures added to the budget since reviewing a tentative draft in June.

The $69.6-million spending plan calls for no major changes in the numbers of courses offered or staffing levels.

Citing the state’s continuing economic problems, district financial officials said they expect the state to withhold $1.9 million of the district’s money. As a result, the district budget includes a projected deficit of $2.65 million for the 1994-95 fiscal year.

Although Ralston did not specifically challenge the expenditures recently added to the final draft, she complained that the board was rushing to approve a budget whose components had not been adequately debated.
