Hawaii’s Saiki Gains in Bid for Governor
Former U.S. Rep. Patricia Saiki handily defeated three other candidates in the Republican primary in her bid to become the first female governor in solidly Democratic Hawaii.
Saiki took 92% of the vote Saturday against three little-known candidates. She faces Lt. Gov. Ben Cayetano, a Democrat, and former Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi, who started his own party, in the November general election.
Cayetano defeated state health director Jack Lewin and four others in the Democratic primary. Cayetano took 57% of the vote.
Gov. John Waihee is prevented by state law from seeking a third term.
In other races, Sen. Daniel K. Akaka was unopposed in the Democratic primary and is heavily favored in the general election.
Reps. Neil Abercrombie and Patsy T. Mink, both Democrats, also are heavily favored for reelection.
