LOS ANGELES : Prosecutors Plan to Try LAPD Officer for 3rd Time
Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles announced that they will try for a third time to convict former Los Angeles Police Officer Stephen Polak in the drug money-skimming case that has resulted in convictions of 26 former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.
Assistant U.S. Atty. Mark A. Byrne said that Polak, whose two trials have ended in hung juries, will be tried again on charges that he falsified a tax return, and is likely to be indicted again on charges that he joined five former sheriff’s deputies on a task force that stole funds acquired in drug seizures.
U.S. District Judge Robert M. Takasugi set trial on the tax charge for Oct. 25, although Byrne said the prosecution will probably seek to continue the case until a later date to avoid a conflict in the prosecutor’s commitments.
