CAMARILLO : Proposal Deals With Adult Publications

Share

In order to prevent children from being exposed to sexually explicit publications in convenience stores, the Camarillo Planning Commission tonight will consider modifying the city’s zoning code to require shopkeepers to place covers over magazine racks holding the publications.

The amendment to the city code, which if approved by the commission must still be adopted by the City Council, would not affect adult businesses in the city, officials said.

“I think it’s appropriate,” said Planning Commissioner William Liebmann. “We are talking about places where adult materials are not their primary business. These are places where kids go for sodas and ice cream.”

Acting City Manager Larry Davis said the “blinder” zoning code amendment was in response to resident petitions given to the City Council earlier this year. He said city staff members agreed with the proposal.

“We agree that these kinds of materials do not belong in front of minors,” Davis said. “We support this change.”

The commission will consider the amendment at its meeting at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 601 Carmen Drive.
