GARDEN GROVE

Donations Give Police Patrol Car Videocams

Who: Garden Grove Elks Lodge, Strawberry Festival Assn., City Employees Assn.

Contribution: Donated money to pay for six video cameras that were recently installed in patrol cars of the Garden Grove Police Department. The police sought help from the community to buy the fist-sized video cameras to help officers record traffic stops and other investigations. Police Lt. Ken Adair said that police now recognize the value of the video camera following the April, 1993, shooting of Officer Howard E. Dallies Jr., who was killed by an unidentified man during a routine traffic stop. Video cameras are effective in gathering evidence and reducing investigation time, Adair said. They also can be a protection to motorists, because officers are expected to follow proper procedures since their actions are being recorded.
