A plan to help homeowners fix up their homes and to preserve neighborhoods was approved this week by the City Council.

Through the program, money will be available for grants and low-interest loans, planning services manager Andrew Perea said. The program is targeted at low- and moderate-income households.

“It’s a plan that will help the citizens and the visual image of the city,” Mayor John Collins said. “This will give them pride in their neighborhoods and their city. It would also be an incentive for them to do to other things to keep their property level up.”

Total funding for the program, including federal grants and redevelopment money, is $1.7 million, Perea said.

Specifics of the plan--who will qualify for loans and grants, and how much will be available per household, for example--have yet to be worked out.

“We’re at an age where the city is aging and a good portion of the housing stock is 30 years old,” Perea said.
