Work Begins on Playground for Disabled

City and county officials broke ground Wednesday for a new “barrier-free playground” designed to meet the needs of disabled children.

The playground at Thornton Park will include rubberized play surfaces suited for people in wheelchairs, as well as ramps and other innovations to permit disabled children to play on climbing equipment, swings and slides. The $600,000 renovation, paid by city, county and federal grants, is expected to be completed by mid-1995, said Ron Ono, design manager for the recreation and community services agency.

“It’s a good project. I think it’s going to be received pretty well,” Ono said after the groundbreaking ceremony.

Later phases of the project will add camping facilities, a restroom and a wheelchair basketball court. The playground is projected to cost about $2.5 million and is not expected to be completed for several years, Ono said.

The park is at Segerstrom Avenue and Raitt Street.
