Copland, Carmella and More

In an effort to dispel the notion that the compositions of Alberto Ginastera or Aaron Copland (pictured) belong to an elite listening corps, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra is coming to South Gate’s Municipal Auditorium this week for a free performance.

“We’re thrilled at the opportunity of having such talent come to our community,” said Dodie Mosby, the head of the Department of Parks and Recreation. “Classical music holds universal appeal, and we expect a large turnout.”

Grant Gershon will conduct the evening’s show, which will feature mezzo-soprano Carmella Jones. The evening’s program will feature Latin music and composers, including Manuel de Falla’s “Siete Canciones Populares Espanoles” and Copland’s “Three Latin-American Sketches.”

The Philharmonic’s neighborhood concerts are made possible by a grant from Target stores and additional funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, the County Board of Supervisors, the County Music and Performing Arts Commission and the city’s Cultural Affairs Department.
