BIG EIGHT ROUNDUP : May Leads Kansas State to Victory

Chad May threw three touchdown passes as Kansas State routed mistake-prone Minnesota, 35-0, Saturday night in a nonconference game at Manhattan, Kan.

J.J. Smith, who set a school record against Rice last week with 301 all-purpose yards, rushed for 137 yards for Kansas (3-0).

May, the Cal State Fullerton transfer who was the Big Eight’s leading passer, completed 17 of 27 passes for 157 yards before retiring in the fourth quarter. In his last seven games, the 6-foot-2 senior has 12 touchdown passes and only one interception in 205 attempts.

Oklahoma State 17, Tulsa 10--Freshman Andre Richardson scored on a 20-yard run early in the fourth quarter and the Cowboys (2-1) held on to win at Stillwater, Okla.

Tulsa (1-3) had two chances to tie or win the game in the final five minutes. On the first, linebacker Eric Hobbs stopped receiver Wes Caswell for a five-yard gain on a fourth-and-six play. On the second, Michael Kedzior was ruled out of bounds after catching a pass in the back corner of the end zone.

Kansas 72, Alabama Birmingham 0--Ashaundi Smith returned the second-half kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Dorian Brew added an 81-yard punt return for a score as the Jayhawks (3-1) beat the Division I-AA Blazers (3-1) at Lawrence, Kan.

Rice 28, Iowa State 18--Byron Coston’s 87-yard run set up a touchdown and Josh LaRocca passed for two scores as the Owls (1-2) won at Ames, Iowa. Iowa State is now 0-4.
