Robert Baldwin rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as Duke, off to its best start since 1988, took advantage of six turnovers to defeat Georgia Tech, 27-12, at Atlanta.

Baldwin, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading rusher, scored on runs of one, two and six yards and Duke, 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, added Tom Cochran’s field goals of 28 and 21 yards.

Georgia Tech (1-2, 0-1) scored on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Luginbill to Charlie Simmons to cut Duke’s lead to 17-6 with 3:07 to play in the third quarter.

The Yellowjackets, however, bobbled the snap on the extra point and Duke, which won its first five games in 1988, added 10 fourth-quarter points on Baldwin’s six-yard touchdown run and Cochran’s 21-yard field goal.

Both scores were set up by interceptions. The first was by Billy Granville, who also recovered a first-quarter fumble, and the other by John Zuanich.

Maryland 31, Wake Forest 7--Kevin Foley passed for two touchdowns and deposed starter Scott Milanovich had one at College Park, Md.

Maryland (2-2, 1-2) built a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter, then kept Wake Forest at bay by forcing four turnovers.

The Terrapins, who defeated West Virginia last week, hadn’t won consecutive games since defeating Wake Forest and Duke in October 1990. This is the first time Maryland has been at .500 since Coach Mark Duffner took over before the 1992 season.

Wake Forest (1-3, 0-2) had four turnovers, matching the number of giveaways the Demon Deacons had in their first three games.

Foley, making his first college start, completed 12 of 18 passes for 149 yards. Milanovich, who lost the starting job last week, completed 10 of 12 for 121 yards.
