Ducks, Penguins To Face Off Amid Labor Conflict

With their regular-season opener in doubt, the Mighty Ducks play their final exhibition game at 5 p.m. today against the Pittsburgh Penguins at The Pond.

The Ducks, 2-3-2 in exhibitions, are scheduled to play Saturday at Dallas, but NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says the season will not start until a new collective-bargaining agreement is reached.

“It’s a concern right now for all the players,” center Stephan Lebeau said. “We know it’s going to be difficult to reach an agreement by Oct. 1.”

Coach Ron Wilson said he is able to put the situation out of his mind during games.

“Certainly I’m not standing on the bench thinking about what Gary Bettman said or what Bob Goodenow (NHL Players Assn. executive director) said in response,” he said. “I dwell on that during the day.”

Luc Robitaille, whom Pittsburgh obtained from the Kings this summer, did not play against his former team Friday because of a tender ankle, but might return to the ice today.
