LOS ALAMITOS : Velin Recommended for City Clerk Job

Donna Velin, deputy city clerk for the past three years, will be considered for appointment as city clerk at tonight’s City Council meeting.

City Manager Robert C. Dunek is recommending that Velin officially assume the duties of the city clerk while remaining as his secretary.

If the council approves the recommendation, Velin, who also has served as Dunek’s secretary since 1991, will receive a 4% pay raise, boosting her salary from $3,389 to $3,525 monthly.

Dunek has served as both city manager and city clerk since 1989. Now, he said, “it would be more efficient for the city to split the responsibilities.”

As the city’s official record-keeper, the city clerk keeps records and keeps the minutes of council meetings and is responsible for state-required filings, such as conflict-of-interest and election-related statements.

Dunek said that Velin has attended several seminars on the duties of city clerks and has gained experience with routine duties and responsibilities.

“She is very capable of assuming the duties of the city clerk at this time,” Dunek said in a report to the council.
