Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were searching Sunday for whoever shot and killed one man and left a second man to perish in a burning truck in Cerritos.

The second man, identified as Edward Burton Whitaker, 35, of Norwalk, was shot in the head and upper body but survived the attack, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Deputy Benita Hinojos.

Firefighters had been called to Norwalk Boulevard and 166th Street at about 2:30 a.m. by a report of a pickup truck on fire, Hinojos said.

They found a man identified as Gene Kennedy, 35, of Norwalk, dead in the bed of the truck. Whitaker, in spite of his wounds, was found walking nearby.

Whitaker was taken to a local hospital, where he was in critical condition Sunday. Deputies declined to release the name of the hospital for security reasons.
