The rebuilding process in the wake of the Laguna Beach firestorm has been trudging forward, but community development director Kyle Butterwick is predicting it will soon accelerate.

Over the past month, an average of five new building permits have been issued per week. Butterwick said he expects the pace to quicken as many more property owners get closer to final approval. Here is building data as of Sept. 16:

* 286 Homes in Laguna Beach destroyed

* 183 Rebuilding applications submitted

* 58 Building permits issued

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s alcohol and drug abuse advisory panel will hold a forum on its plan to use drug-sniffing police dogs on high school campuses.

The committee will make recommendations to the district board on whether and how to proceed with a plan to do random sniff-searches of lockers and cars in student parking lots at the district’s five high schools.

The session runs from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Harper Community Center, 425 E. 18th St., Costa Mesa.
