Novelist Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s classic study of mob violence, lynching and the tortures of conscience is done as a grim, gray, stylized Western morality play. Unrelenting and extremely powerful, this 1943 release is arguably director William Wellman’s best film. With Henry Fonda (pictured) and Harry Morgan as cowpokes in the mob and Dana Andrews, Anthony Quinn and Francis Ford as the victims (AMC Sunday at 4 and 10 p.m.).
