CANOGA PARK : Parent Donates $15,000 to School

When Karen Ly came into a large sum of money, she decided to donate $15,000 of it to her son’s elementary school, even though the boy will be graduating in less than a year.

“I would like my son to use these tools and I can do that for him. But what about his friend next door?” said Ly, who made the donation to the Limerick Avenue Elementary School in Canoga Park.

“There’s an awful lot of children that need these resources and we need to do that for them.”

Of the donated funds, $10,000 will go toward putting computers in the school’s now-empty computer lab. The school had completed the construction but had run out of funds for the project before the computers could be purchased, according to school Principal Ronni Ephraim.

“We’re not a rich school,” said Ephraim of the school, which is populated mostly by children living in neighboring housing projects.

Ly asked that the remaining $5,000 be used toward the purchase of teaching tools such as microscopes.

“It seems like a huge sum of money, but when it comes to education for our children and for the next generations, it is not that much,” Ly said.

“Whatever they need I would like to go and help teachers get the tools to be able to teach our children.”
