Bill Would Grant Civil Rights Panel $9.5 Million
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights would receive $9.5 million for the next fiscal year under a bill passed Monday by the House. Senate action is pending.
The House bill, passed by voice vote, also authorizes the commission to use public service announcements and advertising to discourage discrimination.
The commission was created in 1957 to investigate discrimination and violations of equal protection under the law based on race, color, age, sex, religion, physical disability or national origin. The commission also enforces federal civil rights law and equal opportunity in employment, education and housing.
