Hardiness Institute Chief Wins Honor

UC Irvine social ecology professor Salvatore R. Maddi has been selected as a 1994 Distinguished Wellness Lecturer in a statewide contest sponsored by the University of California and Health Net.

Maddi, a clinical psychologist, is president of the Hardiness Institute in Irvine.

He was honored for his “Hardiness Enhancing Lifestyle Program,” which includes social support, nutrition, exercise and addiction control.

Maddi will give an acceptance address at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the University Club at UCI.

Assertiveness Seminar to Aid Workers

Rancho Santiago Community College will offer an assertiveness training course on Thursday in Santa Ana, a district spokesman said.

The seminar is designed to enhance participants’ job performance through more assertive communication. It will be offered from 8 to 11:50 a.m. in the Orange County Administration Building, Room 216, 10 Civic Center Plaza, district spokesman Dale Ruhe said.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis for those who request ticket number 90411. The seminar will cost $2.60, except for those with advanced degrees, who pay $10.

Tips for Attention Deficit Students

Students with Attention Deficit Disorder are invited to a seminar entitled “ADD 17 Years and Up: Study Skills for Winning.” The seminar will take place Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Coastline Counseling Center, 1200 Quail St., Suite 105, Newport Beach.

The seminar will cover visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles and how they show up in people with ADD.

Presenter Denise Davis is counseling coordinator for Intensive Learning Experience, a program funded by the California State University system.

A $5 donation is requested, but seminar sponsors said people who cannot make a donation won’t be turned away. For more information, call (714) 476-0991.

Ex-Spy to Share What It’s Like in Cold

Thomas Moon, who spied for the Allies behind enemy lines during World War II, will appear at Orange Coast College to discuss espionage and covert operations.

The former Office of Strategic Services agent will lecture from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday in the Fine Arts Hall.
