PASADENA : 2 Teen-Agers Get Probation for Crimes During Riots

Two Altadena teen-agers, previously accused of a 1992 riot-related murder, this week were given five years’ probation on related charges. O’Dell Whitley Jr., 19, and Leonard Hampton, 18, were sentenced in Pasadena Superior Court for commercial burglary of an Arcadia sporting goods store and attempted robbery of a pedestrian.

The two originally were charged with a series of crimes that included the stabbing death of Lucy Maronian, 52, in her Altadena home. The crimes occurred May 1, 1992, during riots that followed not guilty verdicts for four Los Angeles police officers accused of beating motorist Rodney G. King.

Whitley and Hampton were found guilty in April, 1993, of the lesser crimes. But a mistrial was declared on the murder charge when only four of 12 jurors voted for conviction. The district attorney decided Sept. 6 this year not to retry the two for murder.
