LAGUNA BEACH

Visiting Artists to Be Welcomed Back

A summer program that allowed out-of-town teen-age artists to stay with local families and participate in art-related activities will likely be replayed next year, school officials say.

“It was more successful than we ever dreamed,” district administrative secretary Nancy Vaughan said. “I would imagine that once the word gets out, this (program) will be very popular next year.”

As part of the CREATE program, 14 high school students from Santa Ana, Los Angeles and Pico Rivera were invited to spend two weeks with Laguna Beach families, taking part in a variety of activities, from pool parties and picnics to visiting the summer festivals and holding their own art exhibit at a city gallery.

“They’re families were very apprehensive to send them down here, which really surprised everyone,” Vaughan said. “They just wanted to check us out and make sure we were going to take care of their kids.”
