Tern trek--Take a guided walk on the wild side of the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary today at 9 a.m.

Sponsored by the Sea & Sage Audubon Society of Orange County, the tour will wind around five freshwater ponds at the sanctuary. A naturalist will be on hand to identify wildlife and plants of the area and answer questions.

The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is among the finest bird-watching sites in the county. Likely sightings include a variety of herons, egrets and other waterfowl, and at this time of year migrant species are also likely to be wintering in the area.

Since birds are also in various stages of plumage, this tour will be especially helpful for beginning and intermediate birders who would like assistance in identifying different species.

During the tour, participants will also learn about marshland flora and fauna, how the marsh was formed and how it continues to exist in the middle of urbanized Irvine.

Reservations are not necessary. Beginning to advanced bird-watchers are welcome, but the program is open to adults only.

To reach the Audubon House, where the walk will start, take the San Diego Freeway to the Jamboree Road exit and head south. Turn left at Michelson Drive, and then make a right at the second signal onto Irvine Ranch Water District property. Follow the paved road and “Duck Club” signs to the house.
